New Threat to Our Forest! - Oak firewood from coast live oak, canyon live oak and black oak trees may be carrying an infestation of voracious beetles named the Goldspotted Oak Borer (GSOB). This new pest is killing oak trees in San Diego County and is being carried north by the transportation of infested oak firewood. Infested areas report an oak mortality of 65 to 100%. Transporting firewood of these oak species outside of infested areas could spread the pest. State and Federal research is underway to determine if there are potential treatment options for saving trees under GSOB attack or preventing currently healthy trees from being attacked by GSOB. Please do not bring oak firewood up to Lake Arrowhead from the San Diego County area. Oak firewood that has lost all its bark is NOT a threat to spread GSOB. For more information call ALA at 909-337-2595 Ext. 103 or visit the official site www.gsob.org. Important Notice to Lake Arrowhead Boat Owners WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU LAUNCH YOUR BOAT IN 2011 Quagga and Zebra Mussels pose a very real threat to our lake and our water system. The mussels have the potential of destroying the ecosystems within the lake and doing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to our water distribution system and your boat's cooling system. Accordingly, we need your help to keep your lake free of the mussels. NO BOATS MAY BE LAUNCHED ON LAKE ARROWHEAD without being certified free of invasive mussels by a registered ALA storage contractor or passing an on-site inspection by ALA staff. THIS IS A ZERO TOLERANCE PROGRAM The Arrowhead Lake Association requires that all boats, canoes, and kayaks launched on Lake Arrowhead undergo a complete on-site inspection for possible Quagga Mussel contamination. Boats that are not clean, drained and dry will be subject to a 14 day quarantine prior to being permitted to launch. Since the ballast tanks on some wakeboard boats cannot be visually inspected, they must have been in commercial storage with a registered ALA storage contractor or must be commercially decontaminated. For information on decontaminating your vessel prior to your launch day, please contact our office at (909) 337-2595 and see the notice below. Avoid delays at the launch ramp by doing the following:
If there is standing water in any compartment of your boat (bilge, equipment storage areas, bait wells, under seats, engine compartments or anywhere else) YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO LAUNCH YOUR BOAT!!! If you store your boat for the entire winter with a registered ALA storage contractor who can certify that the boat has been in "DEAD" storage where you have not had access, your boat will be launched without delay. If you store your boat at home or with a non-registered facility, your boat must be CLEAN, DRAINED and DRY. Additionally, ballast tanks and bladders must be determined to be dry by visual inspection or must be commercially decontaminated with 140 degree Fahrenheit water. For more information regarding boating on Lake Arrowhead, members may contact the Arrowhead Lake Association at 909-337-2595. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! The 2009 Audit Report is here.
